NoScript Provides Additional Security
The popular NoScript addon for Firefox, which used to be primarily used for blocking Javascript (for security reasons) now allows easier blocking of Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime, Sun Java, and Microsoft Silverlight content. This used to be possible using the Flashblock addon, but the catch 22 with that is that it only works on pages which you have javascript enabled for (which obviously defeats the point).
From the NoScript website:
IMPORTANT: Starting with version 1.1.9.5 beta, Flash, Silverlight and all the other plugin content handlers (e.g. the Quicktime plugin) are disabled by default on unknown sites, just like Java and JavaScript, in order to prevent plugin-based attacks. You will still able to enjoy multimedia content either automatically, if it comes from trusted sites, or by selectively enabling clips and applets. Anyway, if you prefer, you can revert to the previous less safe setup by unchecking the relevant Forbid preferences in the NoScript Options|Plugins panel. Read more about the security reasons behind these new default settings.
